The Desert

It was said to me once 'midst a time of strife,
"The mountains fill you up.
The desert empties you out."
The symbols of Life.

I've climbed and sat atop
Incredible mountains over my time.
Carried there by and crawling beside
An enduring love.

I was filled by the mountains that had been my life.
But a desert loomed ahead in my sight.
It had to be crossed, so I stumbled in.
No strength left for struggle or fight.

In silence, in solitude, slowly I walked.
Scorched by days, shivering by night.
The fullness ebbed.
And the emptiness did smite.

Yet, lo, off in the distance there did appear,
Majestic peaks piercing the clouds, calming my fear.
And gently prodding me,
They softly called to come near.

And there in those mountains,
Towering so high above
The floor of the desert, waiting again,
Was enduring love.

I took this photo in November 1998, in the heart of the spectacular Mojave south of Needles on CA95.  The mountains in the the distance are The Turtle range in San Bernadino county.
