Tips For Writers Bio Author Profile Susan Haley
A staunch proponent of networking, Susan Haley, a multi-published author of several networking and publishing articles, one Coffee table book of Essays and Poetry, FIBERS IN THE WEB, and a fiction novel, RAINY DAY PEOPLE, sees herself “more in a helpful role” than just that of a fellow writer. Widowed at fifty-five with two grown sons, her world and all she’d known her adult life collapsed. She started writing with a vengeance. Every thought, every fear, every resentment and despair, spilled out as words falling haphazardly on a page during the initial months of solitude. “Writers are often, by nature, a reclusive lot,” she says. “The written word is sometimes their favored instrument of communication driven by hidden fears, unspoken passions, or simple insecurity in outward expression. Yet, they’re driven by the innermost rumblings that feed the mind, soothe the soul, and guide the words to fruition, and possibly publication. Then what?” “You’ve decided your work is ready for the eyes of the reading world. Your motivation is to simply touch another ‘soul’ out there. Now you need a vehicle, a plan of action, to find them, or help them find you. “By applying a few simple principles, even the most timid or inexperienced verbal communicator can turn publishing and promoting their work into a rewarding journey of new friends, new opportunities, new growth in writing, and results!” says Susan. “A total introvert, I sheepishly entered my first Writers Group meeting bordering on terror,” she confided with a smile. “I can empathize, yet, with those approaching this milestone. That first step out. “It’s important to remember networking with others is much like dealing with life, itself. First, get to know yourself, assess your purpose, your goals, analyze your strong points, your weak points. Use the same guidelines I put forth in my article “To Publish, Or Not To Publish . . . And How?” “Acknowledge that to receive, you first must give. Get out and join a local Writers Group, get enthusiastic, help with community literary projects, help and support other writers and their work. Take a chance on buying an ‘unknown’ author’s book. Isn’t that what you’re asking others to do for you? And, by all means, attend Writers Conferences and Workshops at every opportunity. Not only do you learn, you meet people. Do something! We must take some responsibility in the creation of our own life, the culmination of our own dreams “Most importantly, for me, is the necessity of maintaining a balance between my expectations and my contributions. One thing that impressed me so about my first National Conference at Valley Forge last year, was the genuine warmth and willingness to help those just starting out by folks like Jerry Simmons! He’s obviously got that balance thing down pat! He contributes as much as he expects to receive. Your reading this newsletter is the proof in the proverbial pudding.” By following these few simple principles Susan has built a network of fellow writers, friends, and contacts that reach from coast to coast and across the continents thanks to the Internet and her inspiring Nature website, www.sucarha.com. “It’s a reachable goal for those geared to finding a personable, interactive, and confidence building approach to taking at least one step ‘outward’ every day,” she says. Susan is one of your peers. She is a County Group Leader for the Florida Writers Association, a charter member of Wizards of Words for which she will be presenting her Networking Workshop at the National W.O.W. Conference in Tampa, Florida September 14-15. Also a member of the Infinity Authors – Infinite Talent team, she’ll be an author representative on the Networking Panel, co-chaired by Jerry Simmons and Melanie Rigney, along with authors Lois Stern, Michael Kleiner, and Donna Jaske, at Infinity Publishing’s “Express Yourself” Conference in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, September 28-30th. “It’s a long way to come in just one year,” she offered, “Last year I attended that same conference, my first, traveling 1500 miles alone from Florida, not knowing a soul, and again, bordering terror. This year, thanks to people like Infinity’s John Harnish and Jerry Simmons, I’m actually a part of it! And the following weekend, I’ve been invited to present at New Voices Bookstore in the East Village in New York City! Not bad for a little ol’ widow lady. If I can do it, anyone can do it!” Susan lives and still works the day job in Sarasota, Florida. Her heartfelt novel of triumph over tragedy, RAINY DAY PEOPLE is available on Amazon.com, BBOTW.com, Barnes and Noble.com, Nothing Binding.com, and can be ordered at your local bookstore. She prefers to keep her own site, sucarha.com, non-commercial.
